Lent
Last year, you may remember that I gave up all sweets (except fruit) for Lent. This year, I’m giving up caffeine. So if you see me drinking coffee or Coke the next 46 days, slap it out of my hands.
I'm down 10 pounds since New Years
But I’m not going to celebrate. I’m not going to gloat. I’m not even going to be happy about it.
Because I’ve been here before. I lose a little weight, start feeling good about myself and think, “Wow fat boy, good job. You should reward yourself. Go ahead, eat a donut or two. And skip that next workout, you deserve a break.”
And next thing you know, I’m...
Bad Day
Or really a bad week. I just haven’t been on my game this week with eating right. I’ve gotten in a couple of good workouts, but I’ve just been shoveling in the junk food.
But the difference between me now and where I was a year ago, and especially two years ago, is that instead of beating myself up and being depressed about it for several days, tomorrow I’m going to drink...

Bring on the Super Bowl, y’all.
Squats
Is there anything that makes you feel stronger or more sore than a good set of squats? Probably not.
7 x 135 pounds
5 x 185
3 x 225
1 x 275
This was sandwiched by a good warmup and a half mile walk around the track. Feeling good today.
Why Training Hard Will Keep You Fat →
Very good article from New Years that I recently stumbled upon. The part about the voices in your head (of the fat guy and the skinny guy) really hit home for me. I’ve definitely heard both of them before. Now I just try to listen to the voice that says, “keep going.”
January Goals
I set out to accomplish 5 attainable goals last month. I stole this idea from Ben Does Life, but didn’t officially participate on his forum (sorry dude). Listed below are said goals, with results in parentheses:
•Lose 5 pounds (lost 6. Boo ya)
•Read 2 books (I read 1 and a 1/3)
•exercise 3 times a week or more (accomplished)
•read my Bible every day before work (70% success rate, needs...

What Crossfit Is and Isn’t →
Pretty good article, check it out.
I had a love/hate relationship with Crossfit for about 3 months. I think I had better trainers than the author of this article, but I generally agree with his thoughts.
Crossfit is basically a good program (see my thoughts here), but can be unsafe in the hands of the wrong trainer or trainee. There are some aspects of it that I still use in my workouts, but it...
Wait for the Punchline
My coworker Scott and I had a meeting with a client of ours, who is a doctor. He mentioned that he was about to turn 73, which was surprising because he could easily pass for 58. I asked him if he had any fitness secrets to share with us young guys. He said that he lifted weights regularly, nothing crazy just moderate weight with lots of repetitions. He walked every chance he could. No smoking,...
Sister: Are you watching Tosh.0 right now?
Me: No, I'm watching the State of the Union address, because I'm an adult.
Things I Did Healthy (Healthful? Healthily?) Today
Took my vitamins
Ate an egg for breakfast
Ate a piece of fruit
Only drank one diet soda
Got my exercise on
Drank lots of water
Only ate one (1!) brownie for dessert tonight, even though my wife cut them up into little bitty squares so small I could probably eat four of them.
How was your day today?
I just realized Tumblrs weren’t supposed to post today in protest of the SOPA deal.
Sorry, Internet.

Still Getting Fit
I’m coming up on the two year anniversary of this blog. So I want to take this opportunity to reflect and be honest with myself and you, the reader.
I’ve wanted to quit this blog several times. I’ve had more failures than successes. I haven’t lost very much weight. I blah blah blah blah
Enough with the negative. Overall, this blog has been a positive experience....

Update
I took a little break from Tumblr, and during this time was in a “Biggest Loser” style competition with a friend of mine. In 12 weeks, I lost 6.5 pounds. I also won around $70, so double win for me.
I’m now sitting at 240.5 pounds, very close to getting back in the 230’s.

I just dropped and gave myself ten, and my elbows/wrists/shoulders popped on all but two of them.

Which dog are you feeding?
I heard a story recently, in the context of addiction, that I would like to share as I think it also applies here. I will try not to butcher it too badly.
Imagine two dogs fighting over a delicious bone. One dog represents all the things you want in life: health, fitness, happiness, relationships, etc. And the other dog represents all the opposite things: over-eating, depression, selfishness,...

My Fitness Pal
Is where I’m tracking my calories and workouts right now. I’ve got some friends on there with me, for a little two-way accountability action.
I’m taking a break from Fitblr for now, for whatever reason it’s not helping me achieve my goals. I’ll be back I’m sure, but until then add me on My Fitness Pal, under my same name: nathangetsfit.
I saw Michelle Wie yesterday.
She was playing golf.

Everything You Know About Fitness Is a Lie →
Today I went to the dentist and picked up an issue of Men’s Journal from November 2010, because dentists never have current issues of magazines in their waiting rooms. I read this (long) article in its entirety, and it may have flipped my new workout plan on its head. Very, very good article. Go read it. Now.
Tech note: The link won’t pull up on the mobile site from my iPhone, so you...
Net calories okay today
Under my 2,300 limit.
35 minute walk/run complete.
78 degrees. Lovely.
Yard is mowed
I’m totally counting that as exercise for the day. American collegiate football and a pretty serious cheat meal coming up. Go Razorbacks.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different...
– Albert Einstein. This famous line has been running through my head a lot lately. In regards to my fitness, I think I’ve been a little insane.
246
Is what I weighed this morning. I’ve gained a pound since Aug. 15th, about what I expected with my activity level. I’m still working out of my funk, getting closer to getting a plan together. But I wanted to post my weight, albeit bad, to keep this thing going. See you again on the 15th.
