Wait for the Punchline

My coworker Scott and I had a meeting with a client of ours, who is a doctor. He mentioned that he was about to turn 73, which was surprising because he could easily pass for 58. I asked him if he had any fitness secrets to share with us young guys. He said that he lifted weights regularly, nothing crazy just moderate weight with lots of repetitions. He walked every chance he could. No smoking, drinking or junk food. He does neck stretches and half sit-ups every morning. He also participates in the Senior Olympics, which I thought was pretty sweet (Old dudes throwing javelins!).

After our meeting, I had to give Scott a ride somewhere, and on the way he offered to buy a round of Sonic drinks. Even at happy hour prices, I can’t turn down a free Diet Limeade. So we proceeded to the drive through. As we were sipping our drinks, a great thought came to me.

Me: After listening to this guy today and couple other clients that are in good shape for their age, I think I get it. It’s not about doing Crossfit, P90X or any of that other crazy crap. They all say the same thing: find something you like to do, do it pretty often, don’t eat too much and keep your ass off the couch.

Scott: Yeah. I should have gotten cheese sticks.

  • Sister: Are you watching Tosh.0 right now?
  • Me: No, I'm watching the State of the Union address, because I'm an adult.

Things I Did Healthy (Healthful? Healthily?) Today

  • Took my vitamins
  • Ate an egg for breakfast
  • Ate a piece of fruit
  • Only drank one diet soda
  • Got my exercise on
  • Drank lots of water
  • Only ate one (1!) brownie for dessert tonight, even though my wife cut them up into little bitty squares so small I could probably eat four of them.
